The Lookout
A home for a blended family. Perched on the hills in Pett Levels this home is arranged as two simple, grounded forms, shaped by the brief and the landscape.
A “day” building to the south houses the main living spaces, while a quieter “night” building to the north contains the bedrooms and is partially set into the hillside. Between them, a glazed link and entrance route creates a gentle transition, framing views out to the garden and drawing light through the plan.
The buildings are subtly shifted along the east–west axis to form a sheltered arrival space, while opening up the master suite towards the sea.
A steeper roof pitch responds to the coastal climate, helping with water runoff while also bringing additional light and volume into the interiors. Externally, a palette of dark timber cladding, zinc roofing, and textured brickwork reflects the local vernacular in a restrained way, allowing the building to sit quietly within its setting. Carefully placed openings provide uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside and coastline, strengthening the connection between inside and out.
